Withdrawal Method – How Effective Is This Birth Control Method?

When practicing the withdrawal method, the man needs to pull out his penis before he ejaculates. It is the most widely used method by couples around the world.

How effective is it?

This method is the least effective method of birth control. It relies on the man being able to withdraw before he ejaculates. If done correctly it may be 87% effective. This does not always work because even before a man ejaculates, there is fluid which comes from the Cowper’s gland. This fluid may contain sperm cells and can increase the chances of pregnancy.

How to do it

During intercourse, before ejaculation, you withdraw the penis from the vagina.

Disadvantages

It is very difficult for a man to withdraw as he is approaching climax. If he fails to pull out in time, this method will fail and the chances of pregnancy increase.

Fluid from the Cowper’s gland may contain sperm resulting in increased risk of pregnancy,
even if the penis is withdrawn before ejaculation.

This is not an effective method for preventing the spread of STDs.
