What is Abstinence?

Abstinence is the decision not to have any sexual relations. For the majority of people it means not having any kind of sexual contact.

How it works?

By not engaging in any sexual intercourse or contact, you will avoid a lot of complications. It prevents pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. During abstinence, no sexual fluids are exchanged, since there is no penetration. This prevents sperm from reaching the egg. No fertilization will occur, and therefore no pregnancy.

How Effective is it?

Abstinence is 100 effective against contraception. It is the most natural form of birth control. In comparison to other methods of contraception, it is the most reliable form to give absolute protection from pregnancies. It also prevents the transmission of STD’s, because there is no sexual contact with another person.

Consistent Abstinence means that you do not have any sexual contact at anytime. Just having sex once, puts you at risk of STD’s and pregnancy.

Diseases like AIDS/HIV or Hepatitis B cannot be prevented from Abstinence. This is because they can also be transmitted byways other than sexual intercourse. For instance, using contaminated needles or unhygienic practices in tattoo parlors can all cause infection.

Disadvantages

Abstinence takes a lot of will power, and can be very difficult to maintain. You might be under peer pressure from friends; you will see a lot of media with sexual content. This can make it very hard to keep one´s self focused while depriving yourself of the most pleasurable experience.
