Male Condoms 101
Condoms are approximately 90% effective when used properly. However, due to improper use, the actual effectiveness is lowered to about 80%.
What is it?
A condom is a thin rubber sheath which is shaped to fit onto a man’s erect penis. They are usually made from Latex or Polyurethane. Both are effective against pregnancy and prevent the transmission of STDs. Polyurethane condoms are higher priced than latex ones.
When using Latex condoms, only water based lubricants should be used. Oil based lubricants will cause the latex to degrade and break up, therefore it should be avoided. Polyurethane condoms are preferred by many because they do not give allergies like latex can to some people. They are also smoother and less abrasive at the molecular level.
Instructions
Always check the expiry date before using condoms. Make sure they are not kept in confined hot places, and avoid direct sunlight. To put on the condom, remove it from its packet carefully. Hold it by the tip and roll it down the length of the penis until it reaches the base of the penis shaft. Take care that you do not damage it with sharp fingernails, or that it does not get damaged from any jewelry.
After orgasm has been reached, you should hold the base of the condom while you pull your penis out of the vagina. After you are completely out from the vagina, you can then remove the condom from the penis. You should dispose of the condom in the correct way.
When using condoms always;
Use Latex or Polyurethane condoms for best protection against STDs.
Use lubricated condoms to help prevent them from tearing during intercourse.
Use a condom once and then dispose of it.
Use spermicide for added effectiveness against pregnancy.
Use water based lubricants with latex condoms.
